There is a somewhat recent trend to not get involved in what can be seen as “someone else’s business.” The process goes like this: I see a man lying on the street. He must be homeless. Perhaps he’s choosing to be homeless. If he’s choosing to be homeless, I should mind my own business so I don’t make him feel bad about being homeless. Now, I feel good about myself because I didn’t make the man feel badly about himself.
Basically, we talk ourselves into believing we’re being kind by ignoring.
